Anne and Benny wanted to give Tekila a way of life that was natural. That meant she could be outside from the end of April to the end of November, depending on the weather, and having daily interaction with her carers.

The house is flanked by two fields, each 10 acres, surrounded by hedges and oak trees with one large solitary oak tree in the middle. The vast slopes offer grazing land covered in flowers, herbs and grass.

During winter the horses spend their days in spacious boxes 3,5 by 4 meters and weather permitting during the day they can go outside during the day, to return to the stables by evening. Every day the horses come into contact with their carers, even during the summer when they are in the fields. They are fed on grass during the summer, and hay and straw during the winter. The horses in the picture thrive on this regime.

It is impossible  today for horses in the Flanders, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom to enjoy such luxury due to the intensive use of land for agricultural purposes. The Berry however, has more than enough space.

Horses have served man for centuries and they like to work but sometimes when this is no longer possible. they need to remain in close contact with humans so as not to become wild and unmanageable. This is made possible by keeping them in daily contact with man, with people, grooming them daily and ensuring they have individual attention even if they live in a group. Every newcomer is introduced slowly until after ten days they can join the other horses and pony’s  outside.
